UDID Registration Delay Guide

UDID Registration Delay Guide

Overview

If you are trying to register your device UDID through Updraft and hit a one hour waiting period before the UDID displays, do not worry. This is not a bug.

This delay is an Apple security measure built into the system affecting all profile registrations on iOS 17.3 and newer. It is not specific to Updraft, and unfortunately, we cannot bypass it on our end.

Why is there a one hour delay?

Starting with iOS 17.3, Apple introduced a feature called Stolen Device Protection. It is designed to prevent thieves from making critical changes to your phone even if they know your passcode.

As part of this protection, Apple requires a one hour security delay before allowing you to install a configuration profile (which is how Updraft registers your UDID) if you are away from a familiar location, such as your home or workplace.

What to Expect During Registration

If Stolen Device Protection triggers while you are registering, here is how the process will look:

  1. You will download the profile through Updraft.

  2. Your iPhone will prompt you to start a security delay (requiring Face ID or Touch ID authentication).

  3. You will need to wait exactly one hour.

  4. Once the hour is up, you must authenticate one more time with Face ID or Touch ID.

  5. Your UDID will finally be displayed and registered to your account.

How to Avoid the Delay

If you want to bypass this waiting period, you have a few options:

Option 1: Register from a familiar location (Recommended) The easiest way to avoid the delay is to register your device while physically at your home or workplace. Because Apple recognizes these as safe locations, Stolen Device Protection will not trigger, and your UDID will display immediately.

Note: If your iPhone is not recognizing your home or work, you can check your settings by going to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > System Services > Significant Locations to ensure it is tracking your safe spots correctly.

Option 2: Temporarily disable Stolen Device Protection If you know you will need to register a device while on the go, you can turn off this security feature.

Important Catch: If you are already away from a familiar location, turning off Stolen Device Protection will also trigger a one hour wait. This option only saves you time if you disable the feature before you leave your house or office.

To disable it:

  1. Open Settings > Face ID & Passcode (or Touch ID & Passcode).

  2. Scroll down to Stolen Device Protection and tap Turn off Protection.

  3. Authenticate with Face ID or Touch ID.

  4. Complete your UDID registration (once the setting is off).

  5. Do not forget to turn the protection back on when you are finished!

Still experiencing issues?

This delay specifically applies to devices running iOS 17.3 or newer with Stolen Device Protection enabled. If you have waited the hour or are at a familiar location and are still stuck, try these quick troubleshooting steps:

  • Verify that you are on a stable internet connection.

  • Check that your iOS software is entirely up to date.

  • Try restarting the registration process from a different familiar location (for example, waiting until you get home instead of the office).
